Former ENO Chief Executive And Mezzo-Soprano Secure Apology From Daily Telegraph

15 May 2007

The Daily Telegraph has today published a full apology to Seán Doran (the former Artistic Director and Chief Executive of the English National Opera) and his wife Ruby Philogene (the Mezzo-Soprano and former winner of the Kathleen Ferrier award), over allegations which were published in Celia Walden’s ‘Spy’ column on 29 November 2005 and which suggested that Mr Doran improperly influenced the decision to cast Ms Philogene in Orfeo in September 2005.

As the Telegraph has now accepted, these allegations were entirely without foundation. Mr Doran was not in fact involved in the decision to cast Ms Philogene and as such there is no question of him having acted improperly. Indeed, Mr Doran and Ms Philogene’s relationship (which culminated in their marriage) did not begin until after she had been cast.

The Telegraph’s apology can be viewed at:

Speaking today, Mr Doran and Ms Philogene said:

“We are very happy that this matter has been resolved and that the Telegraph has now set the record straight”.

Mr Doran and Ms Philogene were represented by Adam Tudor of Carter-Ruck.
