Statement in Open Court

Frank Warren and The Random House Group Limited – Daily Record

4 October 2007

Hanna Basha, Carter-Ruck, Solicitor-Advocate for the Claimant
My Lord in this libel action I appear for the Claimant. Keith Northrop of Goodman Derrick, appears for the Defendant.

The Claimant is an eminent boxing promoter and the Chief Executive of Sports Network Limited. The Defendant owns and publishes the Daily Record.

On the 13 March 2007 the Defendant published an article in the Daily Record about the boxer John Simpson’s loss to Derry Matthews in their featherweight title clash in Liverpool on 10 March 2007. The article alleged that Mr Warren had dishonestly fixed the outcome of the Simpson/Matthews fight and in breach of the rules of the World Boxing Union had met the fight referee the evening before the bout.

These allegations are untrue in their entirety. Mr Warren in no way influenced, or sought to influence, the outcome of this bout. Indeed Mr Warren was not even in Liverpool on the weekend in question.

The Defendant now accepts there is no truth whatsoever in such allegations and has agreed to pay the Claimant such compensation and costs as may be agreed or determined by the Court to be payable.

Keith Northrop, Solicitor for the Defendant
On behalf of the Defendant I accept everything my friend has said. The Defendant accepts there is no truth whatsoever in such allegations and has agreed to pay the Claimant such compensation, and costs, as may be agreed or determined by the Court to be payable.

Hanna Basha, Carter-Ruck, Solicitor-Advocate for the Claimant

My Lord in all the circumstances, the Claimant’s object in bringing these proceedings has been achieved.
