The conviction of Dmitrii Ovsiannikov, the first individual in the UK to be found guilty of breaching its sanctions regime against Russia, has sparked debate about whether it aligns with the UK’s broader foreign policy goals. The case also underscores the slow pace of sanctions enforcement in the UK more generally. Although there has recently been an increase in civil enforcement action, the backlog of cases and complex legal challenges suggest that authorities face ongoing difficulties in addressing violations swiftly and effectively.
